Submitting a New Course to UICC

Instructors who wish to propose, revise or delete a course in the INTD or UNIV subject areas should follow the below instructions and are encouraged to contact uicc@uconn.edu before initiating the below process for an informational call with the UICC Chair and administrator:

  1. Ensure that the course you are interested in proposing is not already or cannot be offered by an existing academic department or UICC sponsoring unit. UICC members can be found here.
  2. Ensure the course you are interested in proposing aligns with the designation requirements as highlighted in these procedures and definitions guideline.
  3. If a non-academic unit is developing a UNIV course, in accordance with the guideline highlighted in point 2, they must first establish an oversight board with a Faculty Chair who will vet the course at the unit-level before it goes to UICC for review.
  4. The sponsoring unit may then submit a new course request via the CourseLeaf system.
  5. Once submitted, the request will go to UICC for review/approval. Original submitters of the course proposal may be invited to a UICC meeting to discuss the proposal and answer questions from UICC members. Following UICC review, all courses will go through Senate C&C and the University Senate before full approval is granted.
  6. Once a course has been approved by the University Senate, the hosting unit may take action to schedule the course and open it to registration for students via CLSS.

Note on Special Topics Course:
Please use CourseLeaf to propose a new Special Topics course.

  • A “special topics” course on the same topic can run three (3) times before it must be made a permanent course (e.g. INTD/UNIV/AIRF/MISI 1985, 1995, 3985, 3995).
  • The numbers 1985 and 3985 are for S/U graded courses; the numbers 1995 and 3995 are for letter-graded courses.
  • Special Topics courses may be routed through the course approvals process more quickly in some instances. Please contact uicc@uconn.edu for more information.

Experiential Global Learning:
In limited cases, such as Experiential Global Learning course alignment or independent studies, forms regarding courses under the UICC can be initiated by students. For information on how to request alignment, please see the Experiential Global Learning website.
